The Indian Spinach (Scientific Name: Basella alba Linn.) is a succulent or fleshy, soft stemmed, branch vine commonly grows to over a meter long. The stems of the plants are the same with its heart-shaped leaves that are also fleshy. Common types of these plants are seen in the backyard gardens, some are green and others are purplish in color. Its fruits are oval in shape and contain seeds.
The following are the medicinal uses of this plant:
- It soothes and protects the alimentary tract and relieves inflammation.
- Promotes improvement of the flow of urine.
- It can cure gonorrhea.
- Also helps in the cure of urticaria, an allergic reaction of the skin producing red, itching weals.
- It helps in softening inflamed parts and lowers the body heat.
- It is also used in the treatment of constipation.
The following are the instructions on how to use this plant for medication:
- The consumption of the cooked leaves of the plant has the property of soothing and protecting the alimentary tract and relieving it off from inflammation.
- The leaves also promote the flow of urine and helps in curing gonorrhea.
- The juice of the leaves is used externally for urticaria.
- The roots of the plant have the property of softening inflamed arts and lowers body heat.
- The leaves are used internally for constipation in children and pregnant women.
The common parts used are the roots and leaves of the plant and normal dosage is used.
