The Rose Apple (Syzygium jambos Linn) tree is an average size tree which belongs to the plant family Myrtacea. The lanceolate leaves are 12.5-20 cm. long with a short petriole or stalk. The tree is easily recognized by its very handsome flowers which are about 7.5-10 cm. in diameter. The flowers are located on short terminal racemose inflorescences and they are arranged in pairs. The edible, succulent and rather spongy fruits are bell-shaped, light green, white, pink, or red in color and contain one or two grey seeds. The fruits are basically tasteless with a mild sweetness.
The following are the medicinal uses of this fruit:
- Asthma
- Fatigue
- Dysentery
- Bronchitis
- Liver complaints
- Brain tonic
- Syphilis
- Sore eyes
- Fever
These are the methods on how to use the fruit:
- The decoction of the bark is used to take care of asthma, fatigue, dysentery, and bronchitis.
- The fruit is eaten to take care of liver complaints and as a brain tonic.
- The crushed seeds are taken with water to control syphilis.
- The decoction of the leaves is used for sore eyes and fever.
Parts used:
- The barks, fruits, seeds and leaves.
Dosage:
- Normal dosage is used in preparing the decoction. Normally in the preparation, 20 grams of this fruit are used in one liter of water.
